Do it now, sometimes ‘later’ becomes ‘never’. Do you remember saying you were going to do something important later and looking back, you realize you never did? Maybe it was reading the Bible, bearing fruits for God, evangelizing, etc. Many old people wished they had done so much in their youth instead of just having fun and pushing the ‘later’ button when it came to the things of God. Solomon was one of the wisest kings to come after David. He wrote the book of Ecclesiastes when he was old. I have been reading this book for sometime now and in my opinion, I feel a lot of regret in his words. Solomon was right with God when he was young but as he grew up, he stopped listening to God. It was in his old age that he realised the futility of life and wished he had honored God in his youth. Solomon did most of the things our generation is doing today. He drank, sought after riches, had so many girlfriends, went for a thousand parties , he worked very hard to please his flesh, he acquired knowledge about so many things and did may other things. Indeed he was right when he said nothing under the sun is new, everything that appears has been done before and so if you think you are reigning champion in the things listed above, I’m sorry but someone did it better many years ago.
When Solomon uses the word ‘meaningless’ to describe life, it doesnt mean life in its entirety. If you read books written by Moses, Daniel , Paul, and other men of the Bible, life to them had so much meaning becuase they spent almost all their life doing what God had told them to do so much that even dying felt very good to them because it would take them to their maker. Solomon’s message in this book comes down to one lesson: Life is meaningless without God. Solomon told us in this book that there is a time for everything, and when that time comes, grab that opportunity then, not later! Most of us belong to the “God will be important to me someday, but I’m busy now" group. What exactly are you busy doing? In Ecclesiastes we realize that the things we claim to be busy doing will all be gone in some years to come and we would be left with nothing. Solomon understood this so well which is why he advised us in Ecclesiastes 11:9 and Chapter 12.
Ecc 11:9, “Young people,it’s wonderful to be young! Enjoy every minute of it. Do everything you want to do; take it all in. But remember that you must give an account to God for everything you do.”
Ecc 12 : 1, “Don’t let the excitement of youth cause you to forget your Creator. Honor him in your youth before you grow old and say, “Life is not pleasant anymore.”
In the last chapter of the book, Solomon again warns us to remember our Creator before we grow old and weak such that we cannot do anything for Him. My dear, it’s now or never. This is the time to rise up and stand for God. This is the time to use your God-given talents to glorify His name. Has God given you any ideas recently? Has he been trying to get your attention for sometime now but you are too busy to notice? It’s time to do that now. The clock is ticking, no one knows how much time we’ve got left and so we have to act now before it’s too late. Go all out and do exploits for God. Start that blog you have been thinking about, evengelize to that friend you think is lost, put other unnecessary things aside and focus on God now. At the end of this book, Solomon gives us his final words "Fear God and obey his commandments, for this is everyones duty. God will judge us for everything we do including every secret thing, whether good or bad." So what do you say? Are you going to live a good and meaningful life with God now or later? Whatever you can do or think you can do for God, BEGIN IT NOW.
